As Paul is going on solo career, I collected questions from Japanese fans. He answered very kindly and politely.

Q1. What have you been doing after Mansun’s split? What has driven you to make new materials and start your solo career?

A1. I have been writing and producing with other artists, as well as putting together new songs for my own project. Please check out Catherine AD and add yourself to her mailing list to hear my songs and production with her in due course. www.catherinead.com

Q2. Such a lucky chance. Did your private life affect your new album? Please tell us about your news in private life if you don't mind. Cheers.
あなたの私生活は、新作に影響を与えましたか？もし差し支えなければ、私生活のニュースを何か話してもらえませんか。
A2. I tend to live a quiet life so it doesn't affect my music that much to be honest although all my songs and lyrics come from the experience of my life, but more on an emotional level.
どちらかというと平穏な生活を送ってるんで、正直音楽にはそれほど影響を与えていないね。僕の曲や歌詞はみんな人生での経験から出来てはいるんだけど、もっと感情的なレベルなんだ。
Q3. When and how do you write songs usually? Do you concentrate on writing at studio? Do melodies or Lyrics come upon you in your personal life?
いつもどんな時に曲作りをしているんですか？スタジオで一気に集中して？それとも普段の生活でもふとメロディや歌詞が浮かんでくるのでしょうか？
A3. I usually work on melodies, then i marry the feeling of the melody to lyrics and poetry I keep in my notebook.
たいていメロディ作りをして、それからノートに書きためた歌詞や詩をメロディのフィーリングと結合させるんだ。
Q4. How do you spend time when you cannot have any idea on songwriting?
曲のアイデアが浮かばないときは、どのように過ごしますか？
A4. I work in my studio or study architecture.
スタジオにこもるか建築を勉強するよ。
Q5. Have you got any concept of your future music career? If so, how is it like?
今後どのような形での音楽活動を展開するつもりなのか、その構想は見えてきているのですか？
A5. I am not sure how my future music will develop other than I will release music when I feel it's the right time to release it and make it when it feels right.
いいと思った時に曲を作っていいと思った時にリリースするだろうってこと以外は、将来の僕の音楽については分からないね。
Q6. Paul, what will be the concept of your solo album?
ポール、ソロアルバムのコンセプトは何ですか？
A6. There is no concept as yet, it's just my own free music, free of outside influences.
今のところコンセプトはないよ。ただ僕自身の自由な音楽で、外からの影響を受けていないものなんだ。
Q7. Do you play all instruments on recording for your new materials?
新曲のレコーディングですが、楽器は自分で全部やるんですか？
A7. Yes I do, I played a lot of the instruments on Mansun records so its not that different to how i always worked.
そうだよ。Mansunの曲でもたくさんの楽器をプレイしたから、いつもやってた方法とはそう違わないんだ。
Q8. Hello, Paul. I would like to ask about your solo album. Do you think it would become like any past albums of Mansun? If so, could you tell us which album it would be like? Or would it be anything "totally new"?
こんにちは、ポール。 あなたのソロアルバムについて尋ねたいことがあるんです。マンサンの過去のアルバムに似たものになりそうですか？もしそうだったら、どのアルバムに似てるか教えてください。それとも、『全く新しい』アルバムになりそうですか？
A8. I think my writing always sounds like me so in that sense I will always sound like Mansun. My new stuff is stripped down and rocky, so its an extension of Kleptomania, but it is different and new.
僕の書く音楽はいつも自分の音楽らしく聞こえると思うから、その意味では僕の音楽はずっとMansunみたいに聞こえるんだろうね。新しい曲は余分なものを削ってロック色が強くなってるから、Kleptomaniaの延長だね。でもそれとは違うし、新しいものだよ。
Q9. Compared to Mansun, is there any extreme change of your music?
音楽性において、mansunの時と比べて極端な方向性の変化はありますか？
A9. Yes it's more stripped down and raw.
うん、もっとシンプルで、あまり手を加えていないものなんだ。
Q10. I love “SIX” and cannot stop smiling for 10 years when I listen to it because it is a great masterpiece. I would like to ask you about making “SIX”. Did you intend to create such an album from the beginning? Or was it made as a result? In other word, is “SIX” a well-calculated album? Who contributed the most on working on SIX?
SIXが大好きで、10年経過した今聞いてもにやけてしまうぐらい大傑作だと思っていますが、そのSIX制作時、
・最初からああしようと思ってたのか？それとも結果的にああいうアルバムになったのか？
・ああいうアルバムになったのは、誰の力が大きかったのか？
要するに計算ずくなのかどうなのか、というところが聞いてみたいです。
A10. I was trying to make the melodies very deep but i had writers block so I concentrated on the structures and making it interesting and detailed. I made the album up as I went along so it was invented on the spot without any up front thought. I wrote most of Six, Chad and I shared playing the instruments with Andie on drums.
メロディを凄く難解にしようとしたんだけど、曲作りに行き詰ってしまったんで、曲の骨組みと、それを面白くすることと、細部にこだわることに集中したんだ。そうしながらアルバムを作り上げたんで、前もって考えがあったわけじゃなく現場で作り上げられたものなんだ。僕がSixの曲をほとんど書いて、Chadと僕が分担して楽器を演奏して、Andieがドラムをやったんだ。
Q11. Dear Paul, Listening to the music and reading lyrics of the album “SIX” has brought me huge transformation and fortune to me. It has made me positive and let me think everything not too complicated. Do you have any albums which have made great impacts on you? Also, thank you for your great music. It has saved me.

A11. Thank you. I loved Prince and Beatles albums when I was a teenager, they were my escapism!

Q12. What do you think about your voice? Why can you sing so lovely? Have you practiced so hard to get falsetto voice?

A12. No I've never practiced, I just sing like that because i write my songs in that key!

Q13. do you remember the first time you sang in front of people? and do you remember how you felt?
はじめて人前で歌った時を憶えてますか？んで、どんな感じでした？
A13. I was sick, I was very shy and nervous but overcame it in the end.
気分は悪かったし、とても恥ずかしがり屋で緊張していたけど、最後には克服したよ。
Q14. Paul, do you still meet Chad and the other members? If so, are they going to play in your solo album?
ポール、チャドやほかのメンバーに会うことはありますか。もしそうだとしたら、あなたのソロアルバムに参加していますか。
A14. No I don't see the other Mansun members much any more. I see Andie sometimes but we don't see Stove as he was sacked for stealing money from the bands accounts which led to the band splitting up. He suffered from Kleptomania.
いや、Mansunの他のメンバーにはもうそれほど会わないね。Andieには時々会うけど、僕らはStoveには会わない。奴はバンドの口座から金を盗んだからクビになって、それがバンド解散の引き金になったんだ。奴はKleptomania（盗癖）に苦しんでたのさ。
Q15. Paul, have you ever thought of changing your hair style?I liked your hair style when you were playing "Six".
ポール、髪型を変えようと思ったことはないですか。私は「Six」のときの髪型が好きです。
A15. I have it long sometimes and short sometimes. In the new photos on my website gallery at www.pauldraper.info it's short, but it's grown a bit longer now.

Q16. what is the question your fan asks you most? and what is your reply?

A16. What is your favourite cheese and what is your favourite colour. The answer is cheshire and grey.

Q17. Do you go to a pub? What's your favourite booze? Cheers.
パブには行きますか？好きなお酒はなんですか？
A17. Yes I have a local pub where everybody knows me, I like to drink guinness or red wine! Cheers!

Q18. You seem to like Pot Noodles so much, but do you take vegetables regularly?:-)

A18. I eat fruit, hummas and sushi!
果物とフモス（ひよこ豆のペースト）、お寿司を食べるよ。

A20. I don't know how to make it, I only know how to eat it!

Q21. What's ur favourite sitcom?
お気に入りのシットコム(Situation Comedy ドラマ仕立てのコント）は？
A21. The Larry Sanders Show is my all time favourite.

Q22. What are you interested in the most recently?
今一番関心のある事は何ですか。
A22. The US election.

Q23. Do you have any plans to have gigs in Japan? If so, when will you come to Japan? I will be waiting for you forever!
日本でライブをする予定は考えていますか？いつ頃日本に来れますか？（こちらはいつまでも待ってます！）
A23. No plans at present, but you never know!!!
今のところ予定はないけど、分からないよ〜！！！！
Q24. Are there any places in Japan you want to visit? Or where was the most impressive place when you visited Japan before? Do you like Japanese food? For example?
日本に来たら行ってみたいところはありますか？または以前来日した時、印象に残っている場所はどこですか？好きな日本食はありますか？
A24. I love Japanese food, I have it in the UK all the time. I love all of Japan, I couldn't pick a specific area that stood out as i loved everywhere I went to be honest from Osaka, to Tokyo to Mt Fuji to the bullet train to Nagoya to Tokyo tower to the imperial palace, I thought the whole place was amazing.
日本食は大好きで、UKではいつも食べてるよ。僕は日本のすべてが好きだし、特に目立ったところをピックアップ出来ないな。だって僕は正直言って行ったところすべてが大好きだったから。大阪から東京、名古屋へ行く途中の新幹線から見た富士山、東京タワー、皇居、すべてが素晴らしかったよ。
Q25. What do you think about Japanese women?
日本の女性についてどうおもいますか
A25. I like them, do you know where I can find any?
好きだよ。どこに行ったら見つかるかな？
Q26. Most Japanese people are not religious or don’t care about religions. What do you think about such national character?
日本人は宗教に関心がない、あるいはこだわらない人が多いのですが、そのような国民性についてどう思いますか。
A26. I think the UK is similar, religion was just a way of keeping the masses in line, we've just replaced it with consumerism.
UKも似てると思うよ。宗教は大衆の歩調を合わせる手段であっただけで、それはわれわれが消費者主義と置き換えてしまったんだ。
Q27. Have you ever heard Japanese music? A Japanese band called L'Arc-en-Ciel sound similar to Mansun, I think.
日本の音楽聴いたことありますか？ラルクアンシエルはMansunに似ていると思うのですが。
A27. Yeah I've heard theyre stuff on myspace, it's possibly the singer's style is similar to mine, but just in japanese.

Q28. After Mansun’s split, what kind of music or albums have you been listening to?

A28. Neil Young, mainly old stuff.

Q29. What do you think about recent UK music scene? Are there any artists you think remarkable? Also have they had an influence on you?

A29. I don't think there's been anything amazing for quite a while.
素晴らしいものはかなり長いこと出てきてないと思う。
Q30. Which artists do you respect now?
現在あなたがリスペクトしているミュージシャンは誰ですか？
A30. Arctic Monkeys.
Q31. I listen to U.N.K.L.E. as artists who have been trying anything new like Mansun, and I would like you to express frank opinions on them.
ＭＡＮＳＵＮのように常に新しい音楽に挑戦し続けているアーティストとして、私はＵＮＫＬＥを好んで聴いているのですが、彼らについてＰａｕｌの率直な意見をきかせてください。
A31. I listen to many new forms of music but I am less impressed with new creative stuff these days. I liked the MGMT album this year.
たくさん新しい形の音楽を聴いてるけど、この頃はあまり新しいクリエイティブな曲には感銘を受けてないね。今年出た中ではMGMTのアルバムが好きだよ。

A34. I'm humbled and amazed people still keep the band alive via the internet, I think the band will grow in time with all the fans support you keep showing my songs and music.
謙虚な気持ちにさせられたと同時に素晴らしいと思った。人々はバンドをインターネット経由で生かしてるんだからね。Mansunはファンみんなのサポートとともに、時がたつにつれて成長していくんだろう。僕の曲や音楽をネット上に配信し続けることによって。
